What’s the opinion of the black community on rap music?
I take a critical view of rap music and “hip hop culture”. In my opinion, it reinforces negative stereotypes by promoting violence, drug use, misogyny, and ignorance. When I discuss the negative aspects of rap music with a black person though, I am often times met with hostility. It’s almost as if black people take hip hop as a part of their racial identity and something to be proud of. This seems to be a major detriment to the entire African American community, particularly those who are very well educated and well off. When I see someone dressed like a “gangsta” I see a walking cliché of bad stereotypes. It would be like seeing a German guy walking around in lederhosen and carrying a basket of wiener schnitzel while yodeling. If I were black, I would try very hard to distance myself from everything hip hop. What do you think, am I correct in this opinion?
