I'm upset about my accent?

Sometimes a foreign accent is a matter of keeping the rhythm and flow of your original language even while speaking English words. When I took French, my French teacher explained that the French tend to speak in a bit of a monotone, but then their sentences tend to go up or down (usually up) at the end of a sentence. American English, by contrast, tends to rhythmically go up and down throughout a sentence as we emphasize certain words. Hindi is another language that has a distinctive up-and-down pattern as the person speaks. So listen to the Americans around you as they speak and try to imitate the rhythm and flow of their language, as well as correcting any words that you may be pronouncing differently. Listening to the news on TV may also be helpful since most news people tend to have pretty generic American accents.
