2001: A Space Odyssey Spaceship (Book)?

Can someone describe the spaceship (Discovery) as described in the book? I found it very confusing. I always thought (from seeing the movie) it was like a pencil very long and thin. The book says it has V shaped fins that look like a sail boat at different angles. Am I reading this right?
